Boat Club Captain Sonny Smart is heading to China with a crew from Wolfson Very exciting travels are coming up for the Wolfson College Boat Club (WCBC) - a team is headed to China today! Wolfson alumni Tong Wu (matriculated in 2014) invited the crew on behalf of Fenghe Sports, a Chinese rowing club.

The winning images from Wolfson's 2017 Photo Competition will be exhibited in the Gallery starting next week. ‘Wolfson Places 2017’, an exhibition of a selection of the photographs submitted by College members to the competition of this name run in the Michaelmas term of this year. It includes the winner, runners-up, highly commendeds and a selection of other images taken around the College.

This is a good weekend to cheer for Wolfson athletes, both on the water and on the ice. Be sure to cheer them on from afar and online too. The Boat Races take place in London on Saturday, and Wolfson is represented by Larkin Sayre (shown below doffing her Hunter wellies with panache) racing in the Blondie crew. You can follow those results on The Boat Race website and social media channels. Larkin, who is American, is doing an MPhil in Energy Technologies.

Wolfson President, Jane Clarke, is pleased to welcome a fellow chemist to deliver the Lee Seng Tee Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, 10 May at 6pm. The event will be preceded by a drinks reception where guests can mingle before the lecture.

Congratulations to Wolfson PhD student Gunther Klobe, who won his blue by jumping a personal best of 1.95m at the Varsity Field Events And Relays (VFEAR) on Saturday. Gunther, whose previous personal best was 1.88m, is understandably "over the moon". You can see video of the jump (and hear the cheering) on our Instagram account.

In 2017, Professor Irene Ng, a long-term Senior Member of Wolfson, offered an annual prize for Wolfson students to encourage innovative thinking on “the digital person” i.e. aspects of individual identity in a networked world.

Wolfson's football club were unbeaten this term in the MCR league. They played six games to lead the table with 18 points, winning their final game against the Zoology Department 5-2. Club President Jack Vanderpump said, "We only starting practising together in October, after we decided we had enough players to split from Darwin College to form our own club. So we're pretty pleased with how we've come together as a team." With Jonas Eberhardt as Captain, the team also includes Angus Buttar, who also plays for the University third team.

Wolfson College is delighted to announce that Dato' Dr Kenneth King-Mun Yeang RIBA (PhD, 1974) has been admitted to an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his international distinction as a leading proponent of ecological and low-energy design, sustainability and master planning.

The Lee Library and surrounding areas were cordoned off today for several hours as the police were called in to investigate a suspected hand grenade found in the grounds. Discovered by Deputy Head Gardener Helen Cripps, the device was lying on the ground in the garden outside the President's Lodge. The Porters immediately cordoned off the area and cleared the adjacent buildings, including the library and some of the administrative offices.

Professor Sam Lieu has been elected President of the International Union of Academies (Union Académique Internationale, or UAI), for a term that lasts from 2017 - 2021. The UAI is the global organisation of national academies in the fields of the humanities and social sciences. Its aims are to initiate, recognise, foster and fund basic long-term international research projects.

Wolfson President, Jane Clarke, will soon be heading west — to San Francisco, where she'll be attending a scientific conference as well as meeting up with Wolfson members and friends. Combining her work as a scientist with her role at Wolfson means that Jane has a packed schedule when she travels, but she enjoys it all. In December, she attended a conference on Molecular Perspectives on Protein-Protein Interactions in Eilat. Whilst there, she was pleased to meet up with Israeli members at the Carlton Tel Aviv Hotel on 7 December.
