Social Life

Hallowe'en Spiderman by Fiona Gilsenan

Club Room & Bar

The Club Room is the hub of student social life, and it was completely renovated in 2018. Here are some of the events that take place there:

  • Parties, quizzes, comedy nights and live music events take place in the Club Room in the evening during term.
  • Dancing after certain Formal Halls, such as the Ceilidh on Robbie Burns' Night.
  • When the Dining Hall is in use, members can eat their dinner in the Club Room.
  • The licensed Bar in the Club Room is open every night from 21.00 to midnight. Its use is restricted to Wolfson Members, their partners and guests and the bartenders are all Wolfson students.
  • The Coffee Bar opened in 2018. It is open during the week from 09.30 to 16.30 and serves coffee, pastries, sandwiches and salads.

Wolfson College Students' Association (WCSA)

WCSA is the first port of call for most students. The Wolfson Ents team runs many events, not just during Term but in the holidays as well. Most of WCSAs events are featured on our What's On listings, but you can also check their website. Better yet, get involved and join the WCSA Committee yourself.

Formal Hall

A memorable feature of College life is Formal Hall, which take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings during Term and cost less than £20 for students. This three-course, candlelit dinner involves an element of pomp – with most attendees in scholars' robes – but is actually a very relaxed environment and an opportunity to chat with students, Fellows, the President and other College members.

Other Public Rooms

Quieter rooms for relaxation, with newspapers and magazines, are the Karen Spärck Jones Room in Bredon House and the Lee Room in the Jack King Building, which also contains a snooker table and television. There is also a television room in Bredon House.

Booking Public Rooms

Some public rooms are available for booking for meetings, study groups, rehearsals etc. Contact the Conference & Events team for more information. In term time, student room bookings are limited to 4 hours per day.

Barbecues

During the summer months barbecues are allowed in the designated barbecue area in the Sundial Garden, although you must let the Porters know first!

Sports Facilities

There is a tennis court and a Gym on the site. Wolfson has a very competitive boat club and we have our own boathouse. For those who would like to row occasionally, we also have a Social Rowing Club.

Music

Wolfson has a strong musical tradition. There are concerts and lunchtime recitals throughout the year, and Music & Madeira evenings when a recital takes place during dessert after Formal Hall. The College Choir also gives concerts and sings at the summer garden party. Members wishing to join in Wolfson musical activities are very welcome and should contact the Director of Music, Ms Lynette Alcántara. Find out more about music at Wolfson here.

College Societies

In addition to the Music Society, there are various Wolfson societies for academic, social, and sporting activities; including clubs for football, cricket, rowing, squash, and more. Each society hosts an introductory stall at the Wolfson Freshers Fair, and additional informationcan be found on College Noticeboards throughout the year. A complete list of student societies at Wolfson is available on the WCSA website.
