Inaugral Wolfson Entrepreneurship Talk: "From Idea to Invention to Company"

Monday 3rd December, 5.45pm (Gatsby Room, Wolfson)

Ronjon Nag
03/12/2018

What is involved in developing discoveries in the laboratory into a successful company? Ronjon Nag (Wolfson 1984), one of Wolfson's most successful entrepreneurs, will share with us his long experience of commercializing inventions, and reflect on what leads to success (and failure).

Refreshments will be served from 5.30pm, and we would like to use the event to kick off a discussion with Members of the College about how we can best help our students to develop their potential as entrepreneurs. We will start the discussion after Ronjon's talk, and for those who wish to continue discussions there will be the chance to join Ronjon for dinner in hall afterwards.

Ronjon Nag (Wolfson 1984) has deployed artificial intelligence systems for mobile devices over three decades, working on neural networks at Cambridge, where he received a PhD in engineering; at Stanford, where he was a Harkness Fellow; and at MIT, where he received an MS. He received the IET Mountbatten Medal at the Royal Institution for his contributions to the modern mobile phone industry. Companies he has co-founded or advised have been sold to Motorola, BlackBerry, where he held Vice-President positions, and Apple. He is currently an advisor to numerous high tech companies and is a Stanford University Distinguished Careers Institute Fellow at the Center for the Study of Language and Information.

In the current review of Wolfson's strategy, we have identified entrepreneurship as an area where Members of the College would welcome programmes, in particular to support students with an interest in commercializing their inventions.  As a highly successful Wolfson entrepreneur, Ronjon is ideally placed to provide insight into what is involved in creating a successful company based on new technology.  Attendees are encouraged to stay behind after the talk and/or join Ronjon and Fellows at dinner in hall for a discussion of how to develop a great Wolfson Entrepreneurs programme which will meet the needs and interests of our students.
