Supervision Reports

Wolfson College is very grateful to our supervisors for their efforts in this crucial aspect of teaching and learning. So are our students, who are hugely appreciative of those who teach them.

Supervision

What are Supervision Reports?

Supervision reports are the primary source of feedback with how a student in progressing with their studies. Supervision reports are a key tool to assess a student’s progress and whether they are fully engaging in their academic studies. The feedback provided highlights the student’s strengths but also their weaknesses. This feedback is useful in steering students on how to work more efficiently and effectively to achieving their goals. Furthermore, the information in the reports helps determine whether corrective action needs to be implemented if there are any raised concerns.

Please note that submitting multiple supervision reports are not necessarily better than a single report. Sometimes it can be preferable to have a single, shorter report that summarises the student’s strengths and weaknesses and makes suggestions on how best to consolidate and improve their work.

Furthermore, supervisors should be aware that supervision reports must be submitted as part of a student’s case made to the Examination Access and Mitigation Committee (EAMC).

Conduct and Behaviour

Supervisors are expected to fully read the Supervisor Expectations document prior to commencing any supervisions.

Supervisors should also make their students aware of the Rules of Behaviour and Disciplinary Procedures for students webpage. Finally, supervisors may also wish to make their students aware of our Unsatisfactory Academic Performance (UG) and Fitness to Study (currently being updated) webpages.

Support and Safeguarding

If a supervisor requires any academic, pastoral or welfare support for their students, it is advised that they first contact the Director of Studies or College Tutors

The college is currently in the process of updating our safeguarding guidance. In the meantime, please refer to the University’s general safeguarding guidance and safeguarding statement. Supervisors who require assistance or advice with safeguarding issues should contact Tania Davies.

Supervisor References

Supervisors are not required to provide personal or academic references for students. Occasionally a supervisor may be happy to provide a reference, perhaps especially if it relates to dissertation work. That is fine and may be very much in the student’s interest. However, please do not feel obliged to do this and do feel free to liaise with the student’s Director of Studies or Tutor.

Deadlines

At the end of each term supervisors need to submit supervision reports for the students they are currently supervising. These reports will be accessed and approved by the Director of Studies or the Senior Tutor.

Supervision are submitted and approved on CamCORS v7 which can be accessed here. Supervisors should submit their reports on CamCORS by the following dates for each term. Any reports received after these dates will not be approved until the following term.

Payment

At the end of each term all approved supervision reports are processed for payment.

Most supervisors are paid directly by each college for supervisions conducted for the college's students and are regarded as self-employed.

Student supervisors who are on a student visa are not permitted to be self-employed meaning all their supervisions for any college must be paid via payroll. Each college pays its own students for all supervisions undertaken.

Direct payments are usually processed by the end of the relevant month if your report has been approved by the Director of Studies or the Senior Tutor. Payments via payroll may be paid at the end of the following month.

Please contact the Tutorial Office (James Wood or Rajashree Dhanaraj) if you have any queries concerning processing or payment of your supervision reports.
