Jan Vermunt started as a Professor of Education at the University of Cambridge in October 2012. Before, he was a Professor of Teaching and Teacher Education at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Previously he worked at several universities in The Netherlands and Belgium, among which the universities of Amsterdam, Leiden, Maastricht and Tilburg. He served as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction EARLI from 2009-2013. With effect from 1 January 2014, Jan was elected as Editor-in-Chief of Learning and Instruction, one of the leading journals in the world in the fields of Educational Research and Educational Psychology.
The study of human learning has fascinated Jan since he started his studies in the Psychology of learning and education. In his scientific work he tries to integrate various perspectives on the study of learning, including cognitive, affective, motivational, social, domain specific, contextual and biological perspectives. Current research interests include, among others: how people integrate knowledge from different sources into a unified theory of practice; how people differ in their pathways to growth and development; how international students and staff psychologically adapt to new study and teaching cultures; and how learning environments can be created that are able to realize high quality learning processes.
