- Reader in Materials Engineering, CU Dept of Engineering
Dr Peter Beaumont was assistant professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) (1970-1973) and currently is Reader in Engineering Materials at the University Engineering Department, Cambridge.
Over 4 decades, Dr Beaumont has researched the relation between structure and properties of engineering materials especially composite materials, polymers and ceramic systems. Dr Beaumont’s research has led to a new formulation of the principles of damage mechanics of composite materials for which he received the Distinguished Research Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. His work has resulted in 200 scientific papers, research treatise, books, encyclopaedia, Composites Design Guides, and numerous scientific papers in international conference proceedings.
Dr Beaumont acknowledges the financial support of his research by the following organisations: the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), The Royal Academy of Engineering, The Royal Society, the British Council, NATO, the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development (EOARD), The Daiwa Foundation, and many industrial partners. This has resulted in many extended visits to the USA in particular including the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), the Universities of Harvard and Princeton, and MIT.
From 1982, the EPSRC and The Royal Society have supported Dr Beaumont’s many visits to The Peoples’ Republic of China for collaboration in research between Cambridge and Chinese universities including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and between Cambridge and Sendai University in Japan.
Dr Beaumont is Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Applied Composite Materials. Also a Founding Member of the Journal of Multiscale Modelling, and a member of editorial boards of numerous other science and engineering journals.
