Climate change is one of the largest challenges of our time. If we want to predict what we might be facing in the future, we need to look back into the climate past. Climate signals derived from ice cores are an invaluable tool for reconstruction of earth’s atmospheric history. This talk will give a short overview about the strengths of ice core analyses compared to other environmental archives. These strengths will then be highlighted in two application examples, one from the European Alps and one from West Antarctica. Finally, an outlook to the next big international ice core project will be given, the search for one million year old ice in Antarctica.
