What do writing and the visual arts give to each other?

Paintings in the Old Combination Room

Come to the Combination Room, Wednesday evenings in February, for a time of playful learning, creative writing, and relaxation before dinner, facilitated by writer-teacher Joy McAlpine-Black. You do not have to attend all sessions, but each workshop will focus on different aspects of the creative writing process.

Responding to the college’s portraits, murals, landscapes, as well as notional paintings, we will engage in writing which facilitates readers to see.

Joy has a BA in Fine Art and Education from Cambridge and a Masters in Museums and Galleries in Education from the University of London, as well as a Masters in Creative Writing from Cambridge. She has been a teacher, part-time lecturer at Homerton College in Art and Education, a museum education officer, a researcher, an independent consultant on creativity and learning in museums and galleries, and an Access and Learning Advisor to museums, libraries, and archives in the Southeast of England. Joy is currently undertating the Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing at ICE.

Access

The workshops will take place in the Combination Room on the first floor of our main building. For the first three dates, it has step-free access with a lift and there is an accessible toilet located on the first floor of the building. On 28 February, the lift will be out of order. If you need to use the lift, please let Laura Jeffrey know, and we will arrange an alternative venue for that date.

For more details please view our AccessAble guide.

How we can develop ‘death activism’ – a variety of tactics and posthuman practices which celebrate death, its inevitability, its forms, from the slow to times of crisis, and how can trauma and mourning emerge as their own forms of expression, or even activism?
