Transport by coach (£30, £15 for students) will be provided from Wolfson College.

We will stop for coffee at the Waterside Café in Normanton on the South shore of Rutland Water. A short walk away is Normanton Church, Rutland's famous landmark, which was saved from flooding when Rutland Water was created in the 1970s. Unfortunately, it is not open to visitors as it has become a wedding venue.

Gainsborough Old Hall is one of the most impressive and best-preserved late medieval manor houses in England built by the noble Burgh family around 1460. It has a magnificent Great Hall and an original medieval kitchen and is considered a “hidden gem in Lincolnshire”. It was not only the home of the Burgh family but also a demonstration of their wealth and importance and it remains a “textbook of medieval architecture” (Simon Jenkins “England’s Thousand Best Homes”). Famous visitors to the Old Hall include Richard III, Henry VIII, John Wesley and the Mayflower Pilgrims.

A guided tour of 1h – 1h15mins has been booked. Visitors are advised to wear warm clothes as the as the Old Hall can be quite cold even in summer.

The Old Hall has a Chambers Coffee House and Café which serves refreshments and light snacks.
