Wolfson College’s Temporary Kitchen installed in the Betty Wu Lee Garden

On Wednesday 6 December 2023, a large crane lifted the component parts of a temporary kitchen over Plommer House into the Betty Wu Lee Garden.

It was a landmark moment for the College, not least because it signalled the beginning of the College’s kitchen refurbishment, a project that has been on the College’s agenda for many years and is the first stage of the College’s Masterplan.

The temporary kitchen will provide a base for the College’s catering teams whilst the main kitchen is redeveloped in 2024.

“The College kitchens have been in need of modernisation for some time” says Darren Smith, Wolfson College’s Domestic Bursar. “It has been exciting for College staff to work with external teams on a design that reflects Wolfson’s values and long-term objectives.”

“I am incredibly proud of the operational teams who have shown great flexibility and enthusiasm in a period of change, and I am grateful for the patience of our College community,” he says. “Whilst there will inevitably be some differences to dining and catering in the coming months, we hope that the temporary kitchen and dining facilities will allow continuity in the quality of the catering provided at Wolfson.”

Building work will begin on the main kitchen at the beginning of January 2024.
