As Undergraduate Admissions Tutor, Noel oversees the recruitment and admission of undergraduate students to the College. He also directs studies in Engineering and Natural Sciences.

Dr Noel Rutter

Noel studied the Natural Sciences Tripos in Cambridge (1994-1997) specialising in Materials Science and then going on to complete his PhD in Cambridge. He then spent two years working for the US Department of Energy at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and subsequently a superconducting R&D company in New York. He took up an academic position in Cambridge in 2006, spending a decade as Director of Undergraduate Teaching in the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy. During this period he was a Fellow of Jesus College for 7 years and Director of Education for the School of Physical Sciences for 3 years. In 2018 he became Associate Professor and Director of Teaching in Materials Science at Monash University, Melbourne, before returning to Cambridge and then joining Wolfson College in the summer of 2021.

Noel has taught a wide range of courses in Materials Science and was awarded the University’s Pilkington Prize in 2016. As well as directing studies in Physical Natural Sciences and Engineering at Wolfson he is also a Director of Studies at Clare and Selwyn. Noel’s research has spanned technical and educational spheres. He has an interest in the fabrication and characterisation of superconducting materials, and on the educational front is interested in curriculum development and innovative educational approaches.
