Part Time Students 2021

Part-time studies at Wolfson

Wolfson College actively welcomes part-time students. We typically have several hundred part-time student members on a variety of MSt and MEd programmes, and a number of students doing part-time PhD and EdD research degrees. Part-time study can be ideal for those who are looking to gain a postgraduate qualification without leaving employment and wish to develop their careers while they continue learning. It can also be ideal for home-based student who wish to develop their skills.

Part-time research degrees are particularly good for those looking to undertake research in an area related to their current professional environment, and many part-time researchers choose to focus on professional and work-related topics in their research.

Unlike part-time degrees at many universities, the courses at the University of Cambridge are not distance learning degrees where study is undertaken remotely. Most MSts are vocational courses centred around residential blocks of three to four weeks in Cambridge spread over the year. You will stay at Wolfson and have the opportunity to benefit fully from the intellectual and social experiences of College life.

We provide a congenial environment in which to meet other students, both part-time and full-time, during periods in residence. The breadth of our inclusive atmosphere, with no divisions between senior and junior members. It is further extended with our academic visitors from journalism, industry and academia, all of whom come to Wolfson for periods of research or study.

Wolfson College recognises the support required for part-time postgraduate students from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. Two College Tutors are dedicated to part-time students and are responsible for their pastoral and welfare support. There are also student welfare officers who have been fully trained to provide peer support.

A Master of Studies (MSt) is an academically rigorous, part-time Master’s degree usually undertaken over two years through the Institute for Continuing Education. It contains a significant taught element and a research project with associated dissertation.

Taught elements are normally broken down into discrete residential modules, which all students must attend. Research projects may be work-related, if appropriate. The programmes are designed to be flexible in order to support students with a variety of circumstances, including international students. Note that some MSt programmes require you to have relevant industry experience.
