Dr Steve Hoath

Steve is a chartered engineer, physicist, and scientist who served as a Director of Studies for Engineering undergrads at Wolfson for seven years (2011-2018) and the supporting Fellow for the Wolfson Research Event for three years. His inkjet standards work continues at Wolfson, while he is a member of the Green Impact team and the Sustainability & Conservation Research Hub.

Steve studied Physics at Lincoln College Oxford (1969-1975), gaining MA and DPhil degrees while working as an extramural student at AERE Harwell. Thereafter he has held various positions:

  • Research Associate at Rutherford Laboratory (1976-1979)
  • Lecturer in Physics at the University of Birmingham (1979-1986)
  • Lecturer in Vacuum Technology and other technical and management posts at Edwards High Vacuum (1986-1997)
  • Business Development Manager at Ion Science Ltd (1997-2001)
  • Development Engineer at Cathodeon Ltd (2001-2005)
  • University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering, Institute for Manufacturing Inkjet Research Centre (2005-2017)
  • Fellow of the Institute of Physics (2011)
  • PhD by incorporation (2015)
  • Associate of Royal Society of Chemistry, Higher Education Academy (2009)
  • Teaching Associate in Part 1 Electrical Engineering Topics at Gonville & Caius (2008-2011)
  • Supervisor for Cambridge Engineering Part 1 Electrical Topics at Wolfson, Newnham, Hughs Hall, and St Edmunds College (2008-2018)

Steve also supports the Wolfson Research Event, the S&C Hub Living Lab and Hoath Family Awards, and the Science Society. He was the Lead Inspector of Accounts (2017 & 2024) and Secretary of the Society of Emeritus Fellows (2022-2024). He is a Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society and the Treasurer of St Peter’s Church PCC, Papworth Everard.

Steve enjoys meeting with alumni, visitors, and students from the Far East.
