Tom Ridgman’s early career from 1973 to 1992 was in the automotive industry where he held a wide range of posts in engineering and manufacturing management. After a short time at Warwick University researching speeding up industrial management processes he joined Cambridge University as a Tutor (later Course Director) on the Advanced Course in Design Manufacture and Management (latterly ISMM). He was active in setting up the Institute for Manufacturing and its service company – IfM Education and Consultancy Services of which he is a Director. In 2006 he gave up the leadership of ISMM to focus on setting up a Master’s Course in Innovation and Entrepreneurship for a new University in Trinidad and developing the IfM’s activities in external education.
As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Engineering Council and chair of the Quality Assurance Committee he takes a leading role in setting and maintaining the competence standards of professional engineers.
His current research interests are education for industry and the development of knowledge through practice and scaling up products and technologies from idea to profitable businesses.
