Professor Jon Crowcroft


Jon is the Marconi Professor of Communications Systems at the Department of computer Science & Technology. He is interested in a wide range of applications of computing systems and networks.

Jonathan Crowcroft

Jon studied Natural Sciences in Cambridge back in the 1970s. He then studied and worked on the early Internet from 1980, gaining an MSc and a PhD in Computer Science at University College London. In 2001, he left a personal chair at UCL to move back to Cambridge to take up the Marconi Chair. He has advised over 50 successful PhD students. He is a Fellow of the BCS, the IET, the ACM, the IEEE, and of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society.

Research Interests

Jon spends half his time at the Alan Turing Institute based in the British Library in London, which is the UK’s national institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. His past work involved social media analysis, deploying networks for developing regions, and super low cost computing for everyone. His current research focus is on usability, privacy and sustainability of platforms for small and large scale machine learning.
