Nigel has had a wide ranging career in the fields of sociology, educational studies and teacher training. Before joining the Institute of Continuing Education in 2007, he was a Research Associate in the Faculty of Education and earlier still a PhD student at Wolfson. He is an active researcher in the areas of widening participation, educational attainment and lifelong learning with a particular focus on issues of gender and social stratification.

Nigel teaches on a variety of courses for the Institute including the Madingley Weekly Programme, the MSt in Advanced Subject Teaching and supervises PhD students for the Faculty of Education. He is Academic Director for: the Certificate in Principles and Practice of Assessment; the Diploma in Coaching; the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education; and the MSt in Advanced Subject Teaching. His published works include: Educational Attainment and Society (2007, Continuum) and Theory Building in Educational Research (2010, Continuum). Additionally, he has published a wide range of journal articles in the field of education studies and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts.
