Dr Kumar Aniket

Aniket holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. His earlier degrees include a BA (Honours) in Economics from Hindu College, University of Delhi, and an MA in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.

Over the past two decades, he has taught economics at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Cambridge, the LSE, and University College London. At Cambridge, he previously served as Director of Studies in Economics at Murray Edwards College, Trinity College, and Newnham College, alongside a range of governance and committee roles. He also served as a member of the National Science Foundation’s Grant Proposal Review Panel for Civil Infrastructure Systems in 2021.

His current research centres on two strands. The first research strand examines the political economy of spatial infrastructure, drawing on the idea that space is shaped endogenously through public investment in physical and digital networks. This work includes two forthcoming book chapters. The first chapter, ‘Markets, Space and Infrastructure’, analyses how infrastructure shapes the space on which markets operate and develops a unified conceptual framework for analysing real-world and digital markets. The second chapter, ‘Spatial Infrastructure in the Modern Economy’, examines how targeted infrastructural investment can expand economic opportunity evenly across space and address the problem of left-behind places.

The second research strand examines how automation and artificial intelligence influence labour markets, skill formation, and technology policy. His paper, ‘Man versus Machine: Automation, Market Structure, and Skills’, develops a conceptual framework that examines how persistent skill gaps result from dynamic complementarities in technological innovation and the market power of incumbent firms.
