Debbie is the full-time researcher on The Poetry and Memory Project, a three-year interdisciplinary project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, investigating experiences of poetry learning, and examining the relationships between memorisation, recitation and understanding. More generally, her research interests encompass orality and textuality, poetry written for children, cognitive poetics and children’s literature.
Alongside the project, Debbie teaches on the Children and Literature course (Education Tripos, Part 2) and the Critical Approaches to Children’s Literature MPhil. She is also working on a monograph for Bloomsbury Academic, developed from her doctoral research at the University of Cambridge, on orality and textuality in children’s poetry.
Debbie worked in teaching, educational publishing, and as a writer and book editor before returning to Academia in 2009. She is a long-standing member of the Wolfson Choir, and periodically indulges her inner thespian by taking to the stage.
