Dr Chris Town MA PhD

  • Research Fellow in Computer Science, CU Computer Laboratory
  • Co Founder and CTO, Imense Ltd
  • Director of Studies in Computer Science, Wolfson College

Chris Town carries our research at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory and is also CTO of Imense Ltd, a local high-tech startup company which he co-founded.

His research lies at the nexus of computer vision, information retrieval, machine learning, and language processing. Together with Dr David Sinclair he pioneered the ontology based approach to automated visual information processing, and his PhD work (supervised by Professor John Daugman) in this area at Cambridge was honoured in the UK's distinguished dissertation competition and through a Royal Commission Industrial Fellowship award.

At Wolfson, Chris is Director of Studies in Computer Science and serves on the Educational Policy Committee and House Committee. He also co-ordinates the graduate mentoring scheme which provides Wolfson PhD students with additional support from Wolfson Fellows or Senior Members in their field of study on a voluntary basis.

At the Computer Laboratory, Chris is involved in both research and teaching, particularly undergraduate supervisions, and he delivers annual guest lectures in the part II Computer Vision course.
