20/01/2026

The College is delighted to celebrate two Wolfson alumni who have been recognised in the 2026 King's New Year Honours for their exceptional contributions to policing and public safety.

Andy Freeburn and Rob Carden

Andrew Freeburn (Applied Criminology and Police Management, 2006) has been awarded the King’s Police Medal (KPM) for his distinguished service in policing.

Andrew, a former Assistant Chief Constable with Police Scotland and current Executive Lead for Organised Crime, Counter Terrorism and Intelligence at Cyber Scotland, also serves as a Panel Member of Redress Scotland. With more than three decades’ experience across senior leadership roles, including in the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Andrew’s career has been marked by operational excellence and strategic impact in serious and organised crime and intelligence.

Robert Carden (Applied Criminology and Police Management, 2009) has also been awarded the King’s Police Medal (KPM) in recognition of his more than 30 years of service.

Rob was confirmed as Chief Constable of Merseyside Police in 2025 after leading Cumbria Constabulary through significant improvements and modernisation. His extensive command experience includes strategic leadership in public order, counter-terrorism, and nationwide policing collaboration.

My warmest congratulations go to Andrew and Robert, who were both awarded the King’s Police Medal (KPM), for their dedication to policing over a number of decades. These well-deserved awards recognise excellent service that goes beyond what would normally be expected. Enjoy the trip to Buckingham Palace, Andrew and Robert. - Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu, President of Wolfson
