Being Green at Wolfson

We are proud of our efforts to improve sustainability, reduce our carbon footprint and encourage environmental awareness.

Wolfson wins Platinum Green Impact Award

Each year WCSA elects a Green & Campaigns Officer who works to raise awareness of sustainability issues and encourage green policies such as recycling around College.

The WCSA Green Officer for 2022-2022 is Millie Race.

Recycling

If you live in College, your closest recycling point is your kitchen. There you will find a bin for combined recycling. This includes: paper, magazines, envelopes, all cardboard, phone books and catalogues, aerosols clean foil, large tins (biscuits, cookies, sweets, coffee, etc.), drink cans, food tins, metal jar lids, all Tetra-Pak cartons, glass bottles and jars, all plastic bottles, plastic pots, tubs, and tray. Please rinse and remove most food and liquid from these items before recycling. Crush plastic bottles, tins, and cans with the crusher next to the bin.

Every room should have a recycling bag. You can empty the bag in your kitchen, leave it outside your door, or leave it in your room to be emptied when your room is cleaned, totally up to you!

Compost bin

We have a compost bin located in the waste collection area at the back of the College, close to the entrance of Bredon House - please use it! But use it wisely: if the bin gets contaminated with the wrong items all our efforts will go to waste - literally!

Eggshells, fruit and vegetable peelings, teabags and the like are all welcome. Strictly NO meat, dairy or grease! Check the red information signs for details. If in doubt - email the WCSA Green Officer.

Mixed recycling

Paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and plastic food containers can be placed in the large purple containers in the waste collection area at the back of the College, close to the entrance of Bredon House.

Ink cartridges

Empty printer cartridges can go in the bin just inside the entrance to the Jack King Building.

Pens & markers

There is a tub for any brand of pen, marker, highlighter or pot of correction fluid in the Library Reading Room, outside the Assistant Librarian's office. These will be sent to the University Counselling Service: by recyling your writing instruments, they are fundraising for Centre 33, a charity providing free counselling to young people in Cambridge.

Electrical items

Small electrical items may be placed in the large blue bin near the back entrance of H Block.

Batteries

In the Seminar Room you will find three large mixed-recycling bins and one large blue battery recycling bin.

Charity Collection Point

If you have any items to donate to charity, there is a British Heart Foundation (BHF) charity collection point in the Wolfson College car park, in the corner near Chadwick House. BHF welcomes donations of any of the following:

  • Clothes, Shoes and Handbags
  • Books
  • CDs/DVDs
  • Games and Toys
  • Homewares
  • Bric-a-brac

If you are a UK tax-payer, you can even Gift Aid your donation, by using the BHF bags and forms available from a table near the Porters' Lodge.
