History & Modern Languages at Wolfson

This course, offered jointly by the Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages and the Faculty of History, encompasses intensive study in language, culture, film, as well as a wide variety of British, European and world history. Like other language students, you spend the third year abroad – studying or working in a foreign country, and immersing yourself in the language, culture and history. History courses allow you to develop critical skills in analysis, research, presentation, and writing.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will have a variety of relevant examination qualifications, though not necessarily in both languages and history; they will be expected to demonstrate an interest in both subjects and will be assessed on their potential to succeed in them. Applicants applying to take a language post-A-level require an A-level or an equivalent qualification in the relevant language. Applications

Applications to study History & Modern Languages at Wolfson are submitted through UCAS. The College additionally requires the submission of written work, a separate written assessment and an online interview, as detailed below.

Written Work

Applicant are required to submit two pieces of written work by 2 November. This should be in a related discipline which the candidate is studying or has studied.  If you are applying for a post-A Level language, one piece of written work should be in the language you intend to study. For the March round, all applicants must submit their written work by 8 March.

Assessment

Those interviewed will also sit a written assessment around the time of the interview. Further information about the written assessment can be found on our applying page.

Interview

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to be interviewed in December (or late March for those who apply in the March round). There will be one or two interviews (in total lasting 40-50 minutes) which will be conducted online via Zoom.
