The politics of time with Carolyn Smith
WolfWorks is a programme of academic skills workshops, designed to help students at every level of their studies and research, and across all disciplines. Topics cover everything from writing for publication and finishing a dissertation to CV and interviewing skills, presentation skills and note making.
The sessions will be online again for the academic year 2022-2023, in order to reach as many students as possible. And they’ll take place on Saturdays from 10:00-11:30, so that full- and part-time students can attend and learn from one another.
“WolfWorks helps you with a range of academic skills, and I have found I always have room for improvement in many areas,” says Abbernaa Dhevi Kukananthan, Third Year Undergraduate, who has attended several WolfWorks sessions since joining Wolfson.
Abbernaa is keen to recommend WolfWorks to students on any course and study level: “Any possible improvement helps our work remarkably,” she says, “so definitely take up at least one WolfWorks programme, if you can!"
WolfWorks workshops across the year
In Michaelmas term, the workshops focus on academic skills essential for transitioning to a new level of study at the University. In the Lent term, the emphasis moves to employability skills, preparing for exams, and looking at beginning a dissertation. In Easter term, WolfWorks takes a step back to focus on broader research skills and finishing your dissertation.

“The workshops will be a little different this year,” says Alberto Garcia Jr, Wolfson’s Academic Skills Librarian, “providing a more hands-on experience for students. We are taking a flipped classroom approach: students will be invited to engage with material on the updated Wolfson College Libguide before attending the workshop. They then have the chance to apply those skills in the session in a supportive environment.”
Make use of even more academic skills sessions
WolfWorks workshops are part of a more extensive academic skills support programme offered by the College Library. In addition to the workshops, students can book one-to-one academic skills sessions with the Wolfson librarians and receive academic writing support in the form of bookable writing surgeries with our Wolfson College Writing Consultants and attend Write Here, Write Now sessions where they can write or study in a structured and supportive environment.
