Wolfson regains Gold, vows to go Platinum next year

Wolfson Green Society and the Sustainability Committee pulled together to gain a Gold Award in this year's Green Impact Challenge. WCSA Green Officer Charlie Barty-King vows to aim even higher next year.

Gold College Green impact

After failing to complete the Green Impact Challenge last year, Wolfson has roared back with an impressive Gold Award in The Cambridge Green Challenge for 2019-2020. With a host of new initiatives from Green Week to more sustainable food choices, a sustained effort was put into raising awareness of ways across College that we can go greener.

The judges said, "Your auditors really enjoyed meeting you and noted the friendliness and efficiency the team displayed. They seem to have created a wonderfully supportive atmosphere in college and done a lot of good in a short time. Like many other things, Green Impact at Cambridge has been unique this year and we appreciate how daunting submitting your workbook and taking place in the remote audits may have been. The University shutdown will have placed additional pressures on you all, both professionally and personally, so thank you for persevering with Green Impact, we're absolutely delighted that you have achieved Gold again!"

"This is fantastic news. I'd like to thank the students, staff and fellows for working together so hard and so effectively to achieve this award." -Professor Jane Clarke

Emeritus Fellow Steve Hoath, who was active on both the Green Impact and Sustainability Committees, said, "I am very pleased to follow the Green Impact Challenge legacy of our previous Domestic Bursar Alan Fuller and his team in supporting our active body of students led by Charlie Barty-King and our College staff to another Wolfson Gold Award in 2020."

Much credit goes to Mercy Kariuki (MPhil, Conservation Leadership) and WCSA Green Officer Charlie, who have also organised a series of well-attended Virtual Green webinars since the lockdown. Charlie says, "Achieving a Gold Award this year has been a highly rewarding and educational process. With an engaged student body, proactive Green Team and helpful College staff, Wolfson is now more environmentally-driven than ever before. It's been fantastic to be involved and everyone is very proud! Platinum Award next year perhaps?"

Many congratulations to all those who contributed to this impressive effort.
