The politics of time with Carolyn Smith
Over 130 photographs were submitted, with the participation of 25 people, including postgraduate and undergraduate students, but also Alumni, Fellows, Senior Members and staff. Anna Bagnoli, Postgraduate Admissions Tutor, who organised the competition said, "Thank you to everyone who took part in the photographic competition ‘Wolfson Places’. Given this enthusiastic response, we have decided to launch another competition round. Details will follow shortly."
The panel met last week and selected four winners in this competition, with one first prize and three runner-ups.
First prize ‘My second home’ by Alwyn Chan, undergraduate student in Law This stunning night photograph successfully shows beauty in the College buildings lit up against a full moon and starry sky. The lights in the windows suggest the vibrancy of life even though no people are actually visible.
‘Strawberry and wine’ by James Downs, p-t MPhil student in Education An original shot of the end of year garden party, this evocative photograph makes the event jump out of the picture: you can almost taste it and hear it fizz.
‘Autumn’ by Justin Yang, PhD student in Public Health The College gardens are beautifully portrayed in all the intensity of the autumn colours, so vivid and dramatic to make the photograph look almost like a painting.
‘Door’ by Michael Simmons, Senior Member This image will resonate with everyone who has ever visited Wolfson. The focus on a seemingly mundane detail makes us pay attention to one feature of everyday life we might just take for granted. The visibility of fingerprints suggests the warmth of human interactions.
