Overview

Join the conversation at Wolfson College to increase research-based awareness and understanding of sexual assault in higher education and equip participants with the facilitation skills necessary to engage in meaningful dialogue and take action in their respective academic and professional settings.

Dr Jane Meyrick will provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence of sexual assault in higher education, the impact on survivors, and the importance of addressing this issue.

Afterwards, Fiona Kinsella will give an overview of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how it can present in higher education as well as discuss PTSD in a university setting and how to manage it in a healthy way. She will facilitate a hands-on discussion of a trauma-informed-approach to engage participants in effective dialogue, manage difficult conversations, and work towards new understandings.

 

Speakers

Dr Jane Meyrick is dual qualified as a Chartered Health Psychologist (registered HCPC) and a Public Health Specialist (Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health). She leads UWE Bristol's contribution to sexual health research and is an active member of the Psychological Sciences Research Group. She has worked in and researched sexual health for over 25 years and will lead an address of her research, her current findings about sexual health and assault in higher education.

Jane will present a timely evidence-based findings on public health and health psychology principles to increase understanding of sexual violence and harassment as well as aims to help inform the building of safer communities. Her newly published book #MeToo for Women and Men provides an overview of sexual violence and an accessible guide to the #MeToo movement.

 

Fiona Kinsella is currently a research study coordinator at University College London (UCL) specialising in Huntington’s disease (HD). Originally from Chicago, she graduated magna cum laude from Western Washington University with a BSc in Behavioural Neuroscience and a minor in Chemistry while also embarking on preclinical work regarding the neurobiology of HD.  At UCL she obtained a MRes (Distinction) in Translational Neuroscience as well as was granted GMBPsS by the British Psychological Society. In addition to her work in neurodegenerative diseases, Fiona enjoys working with a variety of patient populations, spreading the word about trauma-informed-care, and researching forensic/neuropsychiatry. 

Fiona is a passionate advocate for raising awareness about the short and long-term psychological/ behavioural expressions of sexual assault (SA). This talk will provide an informed and safe space for all to talk about their personal experiences in higher education as well as potential recommendations on how the culture/response to SA by institutions may be improved. There will also be a discussion on how to reach out to those exhibiting noticeable signs of the sequelae of SA and reaffirming that there is absolutely no set timeline to heal from sexual assault trauma.

 

Details

The conversation will take place from 18.30-20.00, with a drinks reception served beforehand from 18.00-18.30.

This event will take place in the Combination Room on the first floor of our main building. It has step-free access with a lift and there is an accessible toilet located on the first floor of the building.
