This presentation explores music therapy with older adults and highlights its value as a psychosocial intervention for a range of aged-related conditions.

Through video example and clinical vignette, it explores music’s role in working with people with dementia and in end of life care. It highlights the benefits of singing on well-being and presents the findings of a randomised control trial that assessed if therapeutic choir singing would reduce depressive symptoms and improve quality of life and cognitive functioning in older adults.

Bill Ahessy is a senior music therapist based in Dublin Ireland. He works with older adults in residential care in the Heath Service Executive and with children with visual impairment and additional support needs in the school system. He is a lecturer and clinical supervisor for the Master of Music Therapy at the University of Limerick and runs a private supervision practice for music therapists. Bill has ongoing research interests and has published in a number of International Journals.
