Overview

The Mary Bevan Recital began in 2011 when former Honorary Fellow, the late Professor Hugh Bevan, funded an annual concert in memory of his late wife, Mary Bevan. Mary was a great music lover, and also a Senior Member at Wolfson. Every year, winners of the prestigious Cambridge University Concerto Competition perform at the concert, one of the biggest musical events in the College calendar.

Join us following our garden party to hear competition winner, pianist Madeleine Brown, and runner-up, oboist Jenny Ryan.

Performers

Madeleine Brown is in her final year reading music at Trinity College. She currently studies privately with Dina Parakhina, and was previously taught by Charles Owen and Lora Dimitrova, from both of whom she gained great musical influence. She was a music scholar for 5 years at Sevenoaks School, before attending Chetham’s School of Music for sixth form under the instruction of Helen Krizos. Madeleine was awarded first prize in the Cambridge University Concerto Competition in March 2023, playing Grieg’s piano concerto. She has won various prizes at the Kent International Piano Courses, including a recital at London’s Steinway Hall, and two concerto prizes. In 2018, she was the first British pianist to be invited to attend Prof. Heribert Koch’s week-long Internationaler Meisterkurs für Pianisten in Düren, Germany, alongside nine other young pianists.

Madeleine will perform piano works by Prokofiev, Scarlatti, Rachmaninoff, Bach/Siloti, Schubert/Liszt and Poltoratsky.

Jenny Ryan is a second year music student at St. John’s College. She previously studied the oboe and recorder at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music with James Turnbull and Rebecca Austen-Brown, performing as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician in venues including the Cadogan Hall and Royal Albert Hall. She is now co-principal oboist of the Cambridge University Orchestra, and was recently awarded second prize in the Cambridge University Concerto Competition, performing Martinu’s Oboe Concerto. Alongside her academic studies, she currently learns the oboe with Melanie Ragge at the Royal Academy of Music as part of the CAMRAM scheme.

Jenny will perform a programme of 20th century oboe music accompanied by pianist Alex Trigg. Works include:

'Lettre d'amour' and 'La cigale et la fourmie' from Cinq pièces pour le hautbois, Antal Doráti

'Poem', Marina Dranishnikova

Sonata in C for Oboe and Piano, Op. 100, Edmund Rubbra

'Interlude' for Oboe and Piano, arr. H. Ferguson, Gerald Finzi

III. 'Finale' from Sonata for Oboe and Piano, Op. 85, Edwin York Bowen
