An editorial in The Times on 20th November 2019 proposed that GCSE exams should be abolished. If such a proposal is to be considered it should be recognised that the same policy was agreed over seventy years ago. It remained the intention for five years and yet was never implemented. This talk will suggest reasons for that outcome, to be considered in any renewed case for such an abolition.
