Professor Gareth Stedman Jones' research focuses on Marx and nineteenth-century socialism; he is currently writing a biography of Karl Marx. He will address Marx's view of what capitalism was and how it might end.

Karl Marx Wolfson Explores Transformation

There is no simple answer to this question, since Marx's views changed over time. But broadly it is possible to distinguish three distinct phases in Marx's picture, both of what capitalism was and how it might end between the 1840s and the 1870s. These, however, have been obscured by the well known 'marxist' answer provided by Engels in the Anti-Duhring in the 1880s, and later justified by a fallacious re-reading of the manuscripts  for vols 2 & 3 of Capital.
