Peter Brookes, Cartoonist

Peter Brookes is political cartoonist on The Times. He describes the daily anxiety of the political cartoonist as the deadline approaches: “The Idea behind the cartoon is the tricky bit and what I wrestle with for the best part of the day”. The drawing he describes as “just mechanics!”.  The cartoons on display are all topical:  twelve cartoons dating from October 2013 to February 2014, one Saturday Nature Notes of 1 January 2014 and three covers for the Christmas numbers of The Spectator magazine, 2010, 2011 (illustrated) and 2013.

Brookes’ awards include British Press Awards Cartoonist of the Year 2002, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012; What the Papers Say Cartoonist of the Year 2005; Political Cartoon Society Cartoonist of the Year 2006, 2009, 2011; and five Cartoon Art Trust Cartoonist of the Year awards. On 1 April Peter was once again named Cartoonist of the Year for 2013 at the Society of Editors National Press Awards and 'Release' was named Cartoon of the Year. We were privileged to have the original on show in the exhibition which was open until 5 may 2014.
