New Year Honours for Wolfson members

Wolfson College shieldTwo College members have been rewarded for their achievements in the New Year Honours List 2012. Dr Carrie Herbert, who studied for her PhD at Wolfson, was awarded an MBE for services to education as the founder of the pioneering Cambridge-based charity Red Balloon, which works with bullied children to help them return to mainstream education. Mr Matthew Moss, Senior Member, and Private Secretary to the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO).

College regrets to record the death of Dr Alan Burgess, Emeritus Fellow, on 27 December 2011. Formerly a University Lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Alan was a Fellow of the College from 1966 to 2001 and Emeritus Fellow from 2001.

Database full of promise

Logo for PomBase databaseWolfson Fellow, Professor Stephen Oliver, is the initiating force behind a new tool for scientists called PomBase, which catalogues the functions of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The yeast is important to researchers of heritable diseases and cancers because its cells functions much like human cells, and the PomBase database gathers together information about its behaviour from a variety of sources. The database is the product of a collaboration between researchers from the University of Cambridge, the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) and University College London (UCL), and is part of a 5-year project funded by the Wellcome Trust.
