Her Majesty the Queen formally opened Wolfson College in November 1977, twelve years after the institution was first founded. The college began as University College in 1965, and was renamed in 1973 following a major benefaction by the Wolfson Foundation. The formal opening in 1977 coincided with the granting of arms, and followed shortly after the Duke of Edinburgh was installed as Chancellor of the University, and thus also as Visitor of the College.
