Wolfson Fellow, Professor Stephen Oliver, is the initiating force behind a new tool for scientists called PomBase, which catalogues the functions of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The yeast is important to researchers of heritable diseases and cancers because its cells functions much like human cells, and the PomBase database gathers together information about its behaviour from a variety of sources. The database is the product of a collaboration between researchers from the University of Cambridge, the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) and University College London (UCL), and is part of a 5-year project funded by the Wellcome Trust.
