Farewell to David

David LuhrsMembers of the College past and present came together to express heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Head Porter David Luhrs at his retirement reception on 11 August.

Fellows, staff, students and other College members from David?s 21 years in post gathered to wish the popular figure every success for the future, at a celebration in the Jack King Building. David has been a significant figure during his many years at the College, running the Porters? Lodge, maintaining security, giving advice and setting a friendly tone at Wolfson by greeting visitors and looking after students, staff and visitors. Current WCSA President, Imoh Ilevbare, told how, on his arrival at Wolfson after a long journey from his home in Nigeria, David had carried his bag to his room, introduced him to his cleaner, then given him £1 with which to telephone his mother, highlighting David?s caring approach to everyone associated with Wolfson.

The President, Professor Richard J. Evans, spoke of David?s loyalty and commitment, noting how warmly David had welcomed Richard and his family to the College. David was presented with a book containing notes and cards from well wishers, from which Richard also read. Among the numerous thanks for support, many people mentioned David?s sense of humour, kindness and warmth. One female student wrote, ?You can?t leave, David. Who will call me ?flower? now?? David spoke movingly of his time at the College, his enjoyment of working with colleagues and students and, in particular, gave thanks to his wife, Barbara, for all her support.

We send David and Barbara all good wishes. David is succeeded as Head Porter by Mike Wignall who, until now, has been Wolfson?s Deputy Head Porter.
