Congratulations to the President’s XI cricket team who in the space of a fortnight not only won their annual match against a Wolfson Students’ XI (for the third year running) but also went on to beat a Girton College XI. Both games were closely contested, but the willingness of certain key players in the President’s XI to sacrifice their wickets for the good of the team at critical moments in each innings proved to be decisive.

The PWF Computer Room, on the ground floor of the Lee Library, was renamed the Gordon Johnson Room with a small naming ceremony before Foundation Day Dinner on 26 June. This makes a complementary pairing with the Sir David Williams Room opposite. Dr Johnson was President 1993 to 2010 and Sir David Williams was President from 1980 to 1992.

Dr Stephen Hoath has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a leading international professional body and learned society, established to promote the advancement and dissemination of physics. This senior class of membership indicates a very high level of achievement in physics and an outstanding contribution to the profession. His election shows that he has met fully these requirements and wishes to support the physics community in the future.

Civilizations in Contact has been awarded a £49,000 grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project that will bring the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum - and with them, a new understanding of Britain’s Roman heritage - to Cambridgeshire schools this summer term.
