Internet access from residential rooms

All accommodation at Wolfson is wired up for dedicated high-speed Internet access. You can apply to plug your personal computer in to the College network from your room.

Charges

The basic Internet access is free but you will have to apply apply using your computer in your room at Wolfson. The application procedure is given below. Once your application has been processed, you will be able to access the Internet. Every user is allowed to transfer up to 15GB of data across the Internet per month. The data transfer or bandwidth includes download and upload and is calculated on a per calendar month basis. This limit is usually enough for the majority of our users.

Once your computer crosses the basic limit of 15GB, the Internet access outside the University will be blocked for your computer by our network management system. The access to the servers inside the University, like the University email service or the internal website, will not be affected. In such cases either you can wait until the end of that calendar month when the Internet access outside the University will be restored automatically or you can buy an “Additional Bandwidth Token”. Each token costs £5 and provides 10GB additional bandwidth.

These tokens are valid for the calendar month in which they are purchased. Any unused bandwidth is not rolled over to the next month. A fair use policy applies to this facility. You can buy more than one token in a single month but excessive use of the Internet is always discouraged as it might cause network congestion and will affect other users in College. The IT Office may restrict the maximum number of tokens for a user continuously generating heavy network traffic.

If you have a valid Raven ID then you can also add these tokens to your network account from the following site. The cost will be added to your College account automatically

http://www.netusage.wolfson.cam.ac.uk/token/

In case you do not have a Raven ID, please get a “Network Token Form” from the Porters’ Lodge and follow the instructions given on it.

How to apply

  1. You should apply only from within the Wolfson College. Applications submitted from outside the college will not be processed.
  2. To connect with the College network you need a network card and a network cable. You might already have them but please do not confuse them with a telephone modem and modem cable. A network cable can be purchased from the Porters’ Lodge for £5 (non-refundable).
  3. Set your computer to "Obtain an IP address automatically" from a DHCP server. You might not have to do this because most computers are set to this by default. See instructions for Windows XP, Windows 2000, 98 & ME and Mac OS X.
  4. Plug one end of the network cable into your computer and the other end into the network socket in your room. Most rooms have two network sockets. The left socket is for data and the right socket is for phone. Please connect your computer to the left socket. After that restart your computer.
  5. After completing the first three steps your computer will have a limited network connectivity that will allow you to access our registration server. Start any web browser and go to the following website.

    http://www.internet.wolfson.cam.ac.uk   or   http://192.168.20.253

  6. 5. You will see a page headed as "Internet access from this room is currently disabled". Ignore this. Instead, look for a link somewhere in the middle labelled as "Click here to apply for a new connection". Click on that link and you will be directed to read the “College network policy”. A room connection is conditional on you accepting and following this policy. A copy of this policy can also be found on the notice board outside the IT Office or online at:

    http://www.wolfson.cam.ac.uk/computers/netuse/policy.html

  7. On the following page you will see an online application form. Please follow the instructions given on the form to fill in and submit it online as directed.
  8. If you are not a temporary or guest visitor, you must provide your CRSID. If you are a new member, you can get your CRSID from the following site

    https://jackdaw.cam.ac.uk/signup/

Processing of application

Your application will be processed as soon as possible – usually within 1 working day of receipt.
