Card Usage

Students who started in October 2013 or later

You will be issued with a University card, which is a smart card with multiple functions:

  • It is used to pay for cafeteria meals at the College Servery and drinks at the Bar;
  • It gives you access to secure College rooms and entry to the College through the Selwyn Gardens pedestrian gate when the main gate is closed (after 6pm);
  • It is used to pay for photocopying in the Gordon Johnson (Computer) Room under the scheme run by the University Computing Service called ‘DS-Print Common Balance’, which requires pre-paid credit for both printing and photocopying;
  • It gives you access to your Department buildings and rooms;
  • It gives you access to the University Library;
  • It identifies you as a Cambridge University student and gives you discounts around Cambridge. Please see http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/misd/services/univcard/ for more information.

If you need a replacement University card please contact the Tutorial Office. The cost for this is £10.

Student cafeteria prices are reduced by 25% compared to non-student prices as a result of exemption from VAT and a further discount of 10%. Cards may have value added to them from debit or credit cards at the service points near the Porters' Lodge and in the Servery.

Students who started prior to October 2013

As well as your University card you have previously been issued with a separate Wolfson card; that card will continue to work as normal:

  • It is used to pay for cafeteria meals at the College Servery and drinks at the Bar. Please note that you will now have to load funds to your catering account using a debit or credit card at either of the service points near the Porters' Lodge and in the Servery;
  • It gives you access to secure College rooms and entry to the College through the Selwyn Gardens pedestrian gate when the main gate is closed (after 6pm);
  • It is used to pay for photocopying in the Gordon Johnson (Computer) Room under the scheme run by the University Computing Service called ‘DS-Print Common Balance’, which requires pre-paid credit for both printing and photocopying.

Please note that your existing University card will automatically be updated to have the same functionality as your Wolfson card.

If you lose your Wolfson card you will be able to access all the above facilities using your University card as no new Wolfson card will be issued. If you need a replacement University card please contact the Tutorial Office. The cost for this is £10.
