Wolfson College Association in Japan

Wolfson College Association in Japan - 2017 meeting

The eleventh annual meeting of the Wolfson College Association of Japan (WCAJ) was held on 27 May 2017 at Kojunsha in Ginza, Tokyo. The gathering was lively and sociable and we were very happy to welcome newcomers and their families. Happy memories of Wolfson College, Cambridge, and recent information of the College and UK were shared. As this year’s guest speaker, Professor Megumi Arai of Sophia University gave a brilliant talk about English public schools, and the lives and writings of the gentlemen and ladies who graduated from the schools. With her own experience at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Arai’s talk was vivid and animated, and greatly attracted the audience’s interest in the history and literature of public schools. Short speeches from all participants were made after the talk; they were very precious and we recognised the valuable relationships with other members. As usual, keepsakes that were very popular among members were prepared; it was striking that a son of a member smiled happily, getting an academic book about English literature! Yasunaga, the president of WCAJ, gave a closing address with many thanks to Ushiyama, the former president of WCAJ, and we said au revoir. The members look forward to the next gathering.

Wolfson College Association of Japan 2016

The annual meeting of the Wolfson College Association of Japan (WCAJ) was held on 16 January 2016 at Kojunsha in Ginza, Tokyo, and celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of the College, as well as WCAJ’s 10th Anniversary meeting.

The gathering was lively and sociable and we were very happy to welcome newcomers.  Happy memories of Wolfson and recent news of the College were shared.  In particular, the speech by Professor Shiroshita of Hokkaido University, who recently stayed at the College, vividly recalled the active social and academic life at Wolfson.  Short speeches from all participants were very precious and we recognised the valuable relationships with other members.  At the same time, on this Anniversary occasion, heartfelt thanks were expressed to Professor Ushiyama, the former President of WCAJ, who has devoted her energies to the Association since its foundation.

As usual, keepsakes were prepared which were popular with members and their families; they reflected recent British trends and, very interestingly, a Japanese translation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel was included this year.  Professor Yasunaga, the President of WCAJ, gave a closing address and we said au revoir.  The members look forward to the next gathering.

It excitingly revealed some possibilities of the Anglo-Japanese relationships from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century, the age of Japanese isolation policy. Short talks from all participants were very precious and we recognised the valuable relationships with other members. Happy memories and recent information of Wolfson College Cambridge were shared. And, as usual, keepsakes reflecting the recent British trends, were prepared and were popular with members and their families. Professor Yasunaga, the President of WCA, and Professor Ushiyama, the former President, gave speeches about the current events in College. The members look forward to the next event.

In the year 2012, Britain celebrated a number of memorable events: The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and Paralympics in London.  Keepsakes reflecting these events were prepared and were popular with members and their families. As only the women of the Wolfson Spain list were available to celebrate, there was a lot of reminiscing about how hard it was to keep a decent hairdo when biking in the rain – and the lack of good, cheap hairdressers to fix the mess when you are on a student budget. There were glorious memories and lots of fun – and wine! Husbands, parters and even eight-month-old baby Tomasita joined in, and the evening ended with promises of future get togethers.
